Ed- (minus) indicates removing items from the traditional school curriculum. The examples are getting a GED as an out rather than a high school diploma or choosing a two-year community college degree/certification to become a dental hygienist or welder. A guild might be another example where participants learn a trade and every class is focused on that rather than a broad education.
